For a new project entitled: NanoCarbonate: Understanding Microscopic Adsorption and Macroscopic Wetting Properties of Carbonate-Electrolyte-Oil Systems in collaboration with an industrial partner we are looking for a: PhD candidate "Stability and wettability of calcium carbonates by complex fluids" The goal of the PhD project, is to get a better understanding of the role of aqueous ions and oil-dissolved polar organic molecules on the wetting of calcite as well as natural carbonate mineral surfaces. One of the challenges to be addressed is that ions can alter the substrate surface in different ways: dissolution and recrystallization, ad/desorption of ions, and desorption of organic compounds (in case of natural rock). Also adsorption at the oil/water interface can contribute to changes in contact angle. PhD position: high resolution AFM visualization of adsorption and desorption reactions at calcite-electrolyte and calcite-oil interface
Currently, we are looking for a PhD candidate. "High resolution AFM visualization of adsorption and desorption reactions at calcite-electrolyte and calcite-oil interface". Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has the ability to image surfaces at high resolution and measure forces between surfaces. Goal of this project is to obtain and use AFM molecular resolution imaging data to enable a better understanding and identification of mechanism of adsorption/desorption processes of ions and polar organic molecules on carbonate surfaces. Particular attention will be devoted to solve the true atomic structure of idealized model surfaces (calcite) and the natural calcium carbonates surfaces in variable electrolyte compositions, to the identification of precise adsorption sites of ions, lateral variations in ion adsorption (e.g. due to steps, defects) or CaCO3 crystallites polymorphs.
